One extended cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted days after the death of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the excursion for a break. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the passenger was not present.

An extensive hunt found her body the next day.

Authorities are looking into the incident, in coordination with investigators and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company stated that travelers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were told that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

In a statement, he mentioned that guests would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also published an updated statement, and said they had "issued a order to the Captain" banning any new passengers from getting on the vessel.

The official said that they would inspect the liner in the Australian city upon its return.

The liner originally sailed from the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the voyage at the point of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the opening port on the itinerary.

Guests on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of dollars to take part in the cruise - were taken there for a day trip with the possibility of trekking or underwater exploration.

The child of the elderly passenger said that her family was "stunned and distressed that the liner left the island after an planned tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she characterized her parent as an "active 80-year-old" who was a participant of a hiking club.
